Hydrodynamic Forces

Hydrodynamic forces refer to the forces exerted on a vessel by the surrounding water due to its motion. These forces include drag, lift, and added mass. Drag is the force that opposes the motion of the vessel and is caused by the friction between the water and the hull. Lift is the force that acts perpendicular to the direction of motion and is caused by the pressure difference between the upper and lower surfaces of the hull. Added mass is the virtual mass of the water that moves with the vessel and affects its acceleration and deceleration. Understanding hydrodynamic forces is crucial for designing efficient and safe vessels.
