Host-based IDS

In the maritime context, a Host-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is a security system deployed on individual computers or devices on a network (hosts) to monitor inbound and outbound network activity and identify suspicious patterns that may indicate a network or system attack from someone attempting to compromise a system. In the maritime industry, these systems are crucial for the protection of sensitive data and the smooth operation of various maritime operations. They are used to safeguard navigation systems, communication systems, and other critical infrastructure onboard ships. Host-based IDS can detect anomalies or deviations from normal operations, such as unauthorized access or modifications to system configurations, files, or software. They can also monitor system logs, integrity of files and directories, and even keystrokes and user behavior. Once a potential threat is detected, the system alerts the network administrators who can then take appropriate action to prevent or mitigate the attack. The use of Host-based IDS in the maritime industry is part of a broader strategy to enhance maritime cybersecurity and protect against potential cyber threats.
