Hawsepipe

In maritime context, a hawsepipe is a pipe or a hole in the ship's bow through which the anchor chain passes. It is usually made of cast iron or steel and is designed to protect the chain from damage as it enters the ship. The hawsepipe also helps to guide the chain to the chain locker below deck. The term hawsepipe is also used to refer to the vertical pipe that connects the chain locker to the deck. This pipe is used to ventilate the chain locker and to allow the chain to be hauled in and out of the locker. The hawsepipe is an important component of a ship's anchoring system.
