Gutter Ledge
A gutter ledge is a horizontal projection on the inner side of a ship's bulwark, extending inward from the top of the bulwark. It is designed to catch and drain water that runs down the outside of the bulwark, preventing it from entering the ship's interior. The gutter ledge is typically fitted with scupper holes, which allow the water to drain overboard. The size and shape of the gutter ledge may vary depending on the design of the ship and the intended use of the bulwark. In addition to its practical function, the gutter ledge can also serve as a handhold for crew members moving around the deck in rough seas.
