Gunwale (gunnel)

The gunwale (pronounced as gunnel) is the upper edge of the side of a vessel, where the hull and the deck meet. It provides a structural support to the vessel and helps to distribute the weight of the vessel evenly. The gunwale also serves as a mounting point for various fittings such as cleats, chocks, and bollards. In addition, it can act as a bulwark to prevent water from entering the vessel. The height and shape of the gunwale can vary depending on the type and purpose of the vessel. For example, a high gunwale is common in boats used for rough waters, while a low gunwale is typical in racing boats to reduce weight.
