Forecastle

Forecastle, commonly known as fo'c'sle, is the upper deck of a ship located at the bow forward of the foremast. Historically, it was the crew's living quarters where sailors slept, ate, and relaxed during their off-duty hours. The term is derived from the Latin word 'foculus', meaning fireplace or hearth, as the area was originally located near the ship's heating system. Today, the forecastle is typically used for storage and as a workspace for deck crew. It is an important part of the ship's structure as it provides additional buoyancy and helps to reduce the impact of waves on the bow.
