Figurehead

A figurehead is a carved wooden decoration located at the bow of a ship. Historically, figureheads were used to identify a ship and to ward off evil spirits. They were also used to represent the ship's name, owner, or purpose. Figureheads were popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, but they fell out of use as ships became more streamlined and efficient. Today, figureheads are primarily used for decorative purposes on replica ships or as a nod to tradition on modern vessels.
