Electronic Chart Display And Information Systems (ECDIS)
Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) is a geospatial information system designed to assist mariners in navigation and to enhance their situational awareness. ECDIS uses electronic charts to provide continuous position and navigational safety information, replacing the traditional paper charting system. The system integrates various real-time information sources, such as radar overlay, automatic identification systems (AIS), and other navigational sensors like GPS and echo sounders. ECDIS provides a comprehensive picture of the ship's situation, including its position, speed, and course, as well as the location of other vessels and navigational hazards. It also includes features like route planning and monitoring, which can help prevent groundings and collisions. ECDIS is mandatory on commercial vessels under the International Maritime Organization's Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention.
