CPA

Closest Point of Approach (CPA) is a term used in maritime navigation to determine the minimum distance between two vessels and the time it will take for them to reach that point of closest approach. CPA is calculated by taking into account the speed, course, and position of both vessels. It is an important tool for collision avoidance and is used by navigators to assess the risk of collision and take necessary actions to avoid it. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) require vessels to maintain a safe distance and take appropriate action to avoid collision.
