Company Security Officer
In the maritime context, a Company Security Officer (CSO) is a designated person within a shipping company who is responsible for the security of the vessel, including the implementation and maintenance of the company's security plan. The CSO is the main point of contact for all security-related matters and liaises with the Ship Security Officer (SSO) and Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO). The CSO's duties include conducting regular security inspections of the ship to ensure appropriate security measures are in place and maintained, enhancing security awareness and vigilance on board, and ensuring that security equipment and systems, if any, are properly operated, tested, calibrated, and maintained. The CSO also coordinates with the Master and the SSO in conducting the ship security assessment and in developing, maintaining, and updating the ship security plan. The role of the CSO is mandated by the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, which is a comprehensive set of measures to enhance the security of ships and port facilities.
