Clutch

In maritime context, a clutch is a mechanical device used to transmit torque from one rotating shaft to another shaft, when engaged. It is commonly used in marine propulsion systems to engage and disengage the engine from the propeller shaft. The clutch allows the engine to be started and stopped without affecting the rotation of the propeller. It also allows the operator to change the speed and direction of the vessel by engaging and disengaging the clutch. Clutches can be manually or hydraulically operated, and can be designed for single or multiple shafts.
