Channel 16
In maritime context, Channel 16 refers to a specific frequency (156.800 MHz) used for maritime communication. It is internationally recognized as the VHF (Very High Frequency) radio channel for distress, safety, and calling. It serves as the primary channel for seafarers to communicate emergencies and safety-related messages to the coast guard, nearby ships, and rescue coordination centers. The channel is monitored 24/7, ensuring immediate response to distress calls. It is also used for initial contact between vessels and between vessels and shore stations, after which communication is switched to a working channel to keep Channel 16 free for emergency use. The use of Channel 16 is governed by international law under the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Radio Regulations and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Misuse of Channel 16, such as for casual conversation or non-emergency communication, can lead to penalties.
