Carrier's Obligations

In maritime context, Carrier's Obligations refer to the responsibilities and duties that a carrier, typically a shipping company, has towards the shipper, the consignee, and the cargo during the process of transportation. These obligations are often outlined in a contract of carriage or a bill of lading. The primary obligations include the duty to provide a seaworthy ship, which means the vessel must be fit to sail and capable of carrying the cargo safely. The carrier must also properly and carefully load, handle, stow, carry, keep, care for, and discharge the goods carried. This includes ensuring the cargo is not damaged or lost. The carrier is also obligated to deliver the goods to the correct consignee within the agreed time frame. Failure to meet these obligations can result in the carrier being held liable for any resulting damages. These obligations are subject to international maritime laws and regulations, including the Hague-Visby Rules and the Hamburg Rules.
