Cardiac Arrest
Cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness. In the maritime context, cardiac arrest can occur on board ships due to various reasons such as drowning, electrocution, hypothermia, trauma, and heart disease. Immediate medical attention is required to increase the chances of survival. On board ships, crew members should be trained in basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques to provide immediate assistance to the victim. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) should also be available on board to deliver an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm. Prevention measures such as regular medical check-ups, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and following safety procedures can reduce the risk of cardiac arrest.
