Breadth, Molded
Molded breadth is the horizontal width of a vessel at the widest point as measured amidships between the inside of the plating of the shell. It is measured from the molded line on one side of the hull to the molded line on the opposite side. Molded breadth is an important measurement as it is used to determine the size of the Panama Canal locks and the maximum size of a vessel that can navigate certain waterways. It is also used in the calculation of a vessel's displacement and tonnage.
