Bilge Keel

A bilge keel is a long, flat plate or fin that is attached to the hull of a ship, running parallel to the keel. Its purpose is to reduce the ship's tendency to roll in heavy seas, making it more stable and comfortable for passengers and crew. Bilge keels work by increasing the hydrodynamic resistance of the ship to rolling, which dampens the motion and reduces the angle of heel. They are typically found on larger vessels, such as cargo ships, tankers, and cruise ships, and are especially useful in rough weather conditions. Bilge keels can also improve a ship's maneuverability and reduce fuel consumption by reducing the amount of roll-induced drag.
