Ballast Water Discharge
Ballast water discharge refers to the process of releasing water from a ship's ballast tanks into the surrounding environment. Ballast water is used to stabilize a ship's balance and trim during a voyage, and is taken on in one location and discharged in another. However, ballast water can contain a variety of organisms, including bacteria, microbes, small invertebrates, and even fish and their eggs, which can be harmful to the environment and human health. Therefore, ballast water discharge is regulated by international and national laws to prevent the spread of invasive species and protect marine ecosystems. Ships are required to treat their ballast water before discharge or exchange it with mid-ocean water to reduce the risk of introducing harmful organisms to new environments.
