Balanced Rudder
A balanced rudder is a type of ship rudder that has a part of its surface area forward of the turning axis. This forward part is called the balance or the horn. The purpose of the balanced rudder is to reduce the force required to turn the rudder, making it easier for the helmsman to steer the ship. The balance of the rudder is designed to counteract the water pressure on the aft part of the rudder, which reduces the torque required to turn the rudder. This type of rudder is commonly used on large ships and is particularly effective at high speeds.
