Asthenosphere

The asthenosphere is a layer of the Earth's mantle located below the lithosphere, extending to a depth of about 700 km. It is composed of partially molten rock material that is able to flow slowly over geological timescales. The asthenosphere plays a crucial role in plate tectonics, as it is the layer upon which the lithospheric plates move. The flow of material in the asthenosphere is driven by convection currents, which are caused by heat from the Earth's core. The asthenosphere is also important in the formation of mid-ocean ridges and the recycling of oceanic crust.
