Aframax

Aframax is a standard reference used for tankers with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) between 80,000 and 120,000. These tankers are medium-sized and are primarily used for transporting crude oil and petroleum products. The name Aframax is derived from the Average Freight Rate Assessment (AFRA) system, which was created in 1954 by Shell Oil to standardize freight rates for tankers. Aframax tankers are capable of transiting through most ports and waterways, making them highly versatile. However, they are not suitable for larger volumes of crude oil transportation, which is where the larger Suezmax and VLCC tankers come into play.
