Abeam

Abeam refers to the direction perpendicular to the fore-aft axis of a ship or an aircraft. In maritime context, it is used to describe the position of an object or another vessel that is located perpendicular to the side of the ship. When a vessel is said to be abeam, it is positioned at a right angle to the ship's keel. This term is commonly used in navigation, especially when two vessels are passing each other. The distance between two vessels when they are passing abeam is known as the closest point of approach (CPA).
