Sulfur Oxides (SOx)
In the maritime context, Sulfur Oxides (SOx) refer to a group of highly reactive gases, known primarily for their role in air pollution and as a significant environmental concern in the shipping industry. These gases are produced as a result of the combustion of sulfur-containing marine fuels in ship engines. The primary sources of SOx in the maritime environment are ships' engines that burn high-sulfur fuel oil. The emission of SOx by ships into the atmosphere contributes to the formation of sulfuric acid, which is a major component of acid rain. Acid rain can cause severe damage to the marine ecosystem, including harm to fish and other aquatic life. To mitigate the harmful effects of SOx emissions, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set strict limits on the sulfur content of fuel oil used on board ships. This regulation, known as MARPOL Annex VI, aims to reduce the amount of SOx emissions from ships, thereby protecting the marine environment and human health.
