Side-scan Sonar

Side-scan sonar is a type of sonar system used to efficiently create images of large areas of the sea floor. It works by emitting a narrow acoustic beam perpendicular to the direction of travel, which is then reflected back to the sonar by the sea floor. The reflected signal is then used to create an image of the sea floor, which can be used to identify features such as wrecks, rocks, and other obstructions. Side-scan sonar is commonly used in marine archaeology, oceanography, and hydrography, as well as in the search for underwater objects and structures.
