Short-range Communication

In the maritime context, short-range communication refers to the communication systems used for the exchange of information over a short distance, typically within visual sight. These systems are crucial for the safe and efficient operation of vessels, especially in congested waters or during complex maneuvers such as docking or navigating through narrow channels. Short-range communication in maritime operations often involves the use of VHF (Very High Frequency) radios, which allow for direct voice communication between vessels, or between a vessel and a shore station. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established specific channels on the VHF spectrum for maritime use, with Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) designated as the international distress, safety, and calling frequency. Other forms of short-range communication in the maritime sector include light signals, sound signals, and flag signals, all of which are governed by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs).
