The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established specific channels on the VHF spectrum for maritime use, with Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) designated as the international distress, safety, and calling frequency. Other forms of short-range communication in the maritime sector include light signals, sound signals, and flag signals, all of which are governed by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs).
