Safety Management
In the maritime context, Safety Management refers to a systematic approach to managing safety, including the necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, policies, and procedures. It is a crucial aspect of maritime operations, aiming to ensure the safety of the vessel, its crew, cargo, and the environment. Safety Management in maritime operations is governed by the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, a standard set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The ISM Code provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention. It requires a safety management system (SMS) to be established by the ship owner or ship manager. The SMS includes various functional requirements, such as a safety and environmental protection policy, instructions and procedures to ensure safe operation of ships and protection of the environment, defined levels of authority and lines of communication between, and amongst, shore and shipboard personnel, procedures for reporting accidents and non-conformities, procedures to prepare for and respond to emergency situations, and procedures for internal audits and management reviews.
