Restricted In Ability To Maneuver

In maritime context, 'Restricted In Ability To Maneuver' refers to a status of a vessel which is unable to maneuver as required by the rules of the road due to the nature of her work. This could be due to a variety of reasons such as dredging, surveying, underwater operations, replenishment, launching or recovery of aircraft, mine clearance operations, or towing operations which severely restrict the towing vessel and her tow. Such vessels are required to display appropriate day shapes or lights to indicate their status to other vessels, and they have the right of way over all other vessels except those not under command. The term is defined in the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), specifically in Rule 3(g) and Rule 18. It is important for all seafarers to understand and respect this status, as failure to do so can lead to dangerous situations and potential collisions.
