Plastic Pollution

In the maritime context, plastic pollution refers to the accumulation of plastic materials in the oceans and seas, which poses a significant threat to marine life and ecosystems. This pollution primarily originates from land-based sources, including littering, illegal waste dumping, and improper waste management practices. It can also come from sea-based sources such as fishing gear, shipping activities, and offshore oil and gas platforms. Plastic pollution can take many forms, including microplastics (tiny plastic particles less than 5mm in size), macroplastics (larger plastic items), and ghost nets (abandoned fishing nets). These materials can cause physical harm to marine animals, interfere with their feeding and reproduction, and even lead to their death. They can also degrade marine habitats, contribute to the spread of invasive species, and impact human health and livelihoods. Efforts to address plastic pollution in the maritime environment include beach cleanups, improvements in waste management, the development of biodegradable plastics, and regulations to reduce plastic waste and increase recycling.
