Not Under Command

Not Under Command (NUC) is a term used in maritime law to describe a vessel that is unable to maneuver as required due to exceptional circumstances. These circumstances may include being adrift, having lost propulsion, or being unable to steer. A vessel that is NUC must display the appropriate signals to indicate its status to other vessels in the vicinity. Other vessels are required to keep clear of a vessel that is NUC, and the vessel's crew must take all necessary actions to prevent a collision. Failure to comply with NUC regulations can result in serious consequences, including fines and imprisonment.
