Navigational Telex

Navigational Telex, often abbreviated as NAVTEX, is an international automated medium frequency direct-printing service for delivery of navigational and meteorological warnings and forecasts, as well as urgent maritime safety information (MSI) to ships. NAVTEX is a component of the International Maritime Organization's Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS). It uses a specific frequency (518 kHz) to transmit text messages in English, and another frequency (490 kHz) for messages in local languages. The messages are automatically received and printed on a NAVTEX receiver carried aboard the ships. The service is designed to provide a low-cost, simple, and automated means of receiving this information aboard ships at sea within approximately 200 nautical miles off shore. There are NAVTEX stations located worldwide, which coordinate their transmissions so that, wherever a ship is, it should be able to receive messages from at least one station, and often from several.
