MARPOL Protocol

The MARPOL Protocol, officially known as the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, is an international maritime law that aims to minimize pollution of the seas, including dumping, oil and exhaust pollution. Its objective is to preserve the marine environment through the complete elimination of pollution by oil and other harmful substances and the minimization of accidental discharge of such substances. The protocol is a combination of two treaties adopted in 1973 and 1978 respectively, and it includes regulations aimed at preventing and minimizing pollution from ships - both accidental pollution and that from routine operations. Today, it's one of the most important international marine environmental conventions. It has been updated by amendments through the years to keep pace with the need to protect the marine environment. The MARPOL Protocol is governed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent marine pollution from ships.
