Maritime Safety Information (MSI)

Maritime Safety Information (MSI) is a collective term used in the maritime industry to refer to navigational and meteorological warnings, forecasts, and other pertinent safety-related messages. These messages are crucial for the safety of life at sea and the efficiency of navigation. MSI is disseminated through various means, including NAVTEX (Navigational Telex), SafetyNET, and Inmarsat. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) are responsible for the standardization and coordination of MSI. The information provided under MSI includes, but is not limited to, warnings about dangerous navigational hazards, changes in aids to navigation, meteorological forecasts and warnings, search and rescue information, and other urgent safety-related messages. The primary aim of MSI is to ensure that mariners are well-informed about potential hazards and changes in the maritime environment, thereby enhancing safety and efficiency at sea.
