Maritime Safety Information
Maritime Safety Information (MSI) is a collective term used in the maritime industry to refer to navigational and meteorological warnings, forecasts, and other pertinent safety-related messages. These messages are crucial for the safety of life at sea and the efficiency of navigation. MSI is disseminated through various means such as NAVTEX, SafetyNET, Inmarsat, and other maritime communication systems. It includes information about potential hazards during a voyage such as weather conditions, navigational dangers, and other emergencies. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandates the provision of MSI under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Weather Service (NWS) are among the organizations that provide MSI to mariners. The information is typically broadcasted in English and the language of the country providing the information. The goal of MSI is to enhance the safety and efficiency of maritime travel by providing timely and accurate information to mariners.
