Low-Sulfur Fuel Oil
Low-Sulfur Fuel Oil (LSFO) is a type of fuel oil that has a sulfur content below 0.5%. In the maritime context, it is used as a cleaner alternative to high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO) for powering ships. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) implemented a regulation in 2020, known as IMO 2020, that mandates the use of LSFO or equivalent fuels in ships to reduce the emission of sulfur oxides, which are harmful to human health and contribute to acid rain. The switch to LSFO has significant implications for the shipping industry. It requires changes in ship engines and fuel systems to accommodate the different characteristics of LSFO compared to HSFO. It also affects the fuel supply chain, as refineries need to produce more LSFO and less HSFO. Furthermore, it has financial implications, as LSFO is generally more expensive than HSFO. Despite these challenges, the switch to LSFO is seen as a necessary step towards more sustainable shipping.
