International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that sets international standards and regulations necessary for the safety, security, efficiency, and regularity of air transport worldwide. It serves as the medium for cooperation in all fields of civil aviation among its 193 member states. Although ICAO's primary role is in aviation, it also has a significant impact on maritime operations. For instance, ICAO's standards for aircraft identification, tracking, and communication are often applied to maritime vessels to enhance safety and security at sea. ICAO also collaborates with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on issues of mutual concern, such as search and rescue operations, accident investigation, and the prevention of acts of unlawful interference that may jeopardize the safety of passengers and crew on board ships and aircraft.
