Ground Station

In the maritime context, a Ground Station refers to a terrestrial radio station designed for extraplanetary telecommunication with ships at sea, or reception of radio waves from maritime satellites. These stations are located around the world to maintain communication with ships regardless of their position. Ground stations may include a large antenna dish, radio transceivers, and related equipment for encoding and decoding communication signals. They play a crucial role in maritime communication, providing a link between ships at sea and land-based operations. They facilitate the exchange of information such as ship's position, weather updates, distress signals, and other vital data. Ground stations also play a significant role in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols used to increase safety and make it easier to rescue distressed ships, boats and aircraft.
