GEO Satellites
In the maritime context, Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) Satellites are a type of satellite that orbits the earth at an altitude of approximately 35,786 kilometers directly above the equator. These satellites move at the same rotational speed as the earth, which allows them to remain in a fixed position relative to the earth's surface. They have also facilitated the development of the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a tracking system used in ships for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS Base stations.
