Gatun Dam
Gatun Dam is a large earthen dam situated across the Chagres River in Panama. It is a crucial component of the Panama Canal, which facilitates maritime trade by enabling ships to traverse between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The dam creates a reservoir, known as Gatun Lake, which provides the necessary water for the operation of the canal locks. When the dam was completed in 1913, it was the largest of its kind in the world. The dam and the associated locks operate by raising ships from sea level to the level of Gatun Lake and then lowering them back to sea level on the other side.
