Deadlight
Deadlight is a heavy, rectangular piece of timber or iron fitted to the stern of a ship to support the rudder and to provide protection to the sternpost. It is also known as a transom knee or simply a transom. Deadlights are usually made of oak or other strong woods, and are bolted to the sternpost and the keel. They are an important part of the ship's structure, as they help to distribute the forces of the rudder and the sea. Deadlights can also be used to mount lights or other equipment on the stern of the ship.
