Coffin Plate

A coffin plate is a metal plate, usually made of brass, that is affixed to the lid or side of a coffin. It typically bears the name, age, and date of death of the deceased, as well as other decorative or symbolic elements. In maritime context, coffin plates were often used to identify the remains of sailors who died at sea and were buried at sea. The plate would be attached to a weighted shroud or sailcloth, and the body would be lowered into the water. Coffin plates were also used to identify the remains of sailors who died on board ship and were buried at sea, as well as those who died ashore and were transported back to their home country for burial.
