Certificate Of Competency

In the maritime context, a Certificate of Competency (CoC) is a form of legal identification document provided to seafarers and maritime professionals, certifying that they have the specific knowledge, skills, and understanding required to perform the duties of their designated role on a ship. This certificate is issued by the maritime authority or government of the seafarer's home country, following a rigorous examination process. The CoC is recognized internationally and is in accordance with the standards of training, certification, and watchkeeping (STCW) set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The CoC covers various ranks in the maritime profession, including but not limited to, Master Mariner, Chief Mate, Second Mate, Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, and so on. It is a mandatory requirement for officers onboard commercial vessels, ensuring that they are competent to maintain the safety of the ship and its crew, prevent pollution at sea, and efficiently operate the vessel.
