Capstan, Steam

A steam capstan is a type of winch used on board of ships, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It consists of a vertical boiler, steam engine, and a drum with a cable wound around it. The steam engine powers the drum, which is used to wind the cable and move heavy objects on board. Steam capstans were commonly used for anchoring, mooring, and towing operations. They were gradually replaced by electric and hydraulic winches in the mid-20th century.
