Ballast Systems
Ballast systems are used in ships to maintain stability and balance by adjusting the weight distribution of the vessel. Ballast water is taken on board or discharged to adjust the ship's draft, trim, list, and stability. The ballast water is usually taken on board in one part of the world and discharged in another, which can lead to the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens. Therefore, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has developed the Ballast Water Management Convention to regulate the discharge of ballast water and reduce the risk of introducing invasive species to new environments.
