Avast is a nautical term used as a command to stop or cease. It is often used to order the crew to stop hauling a line or to bring a ship to a stop. The term is derived from the Dutch phrase 'hou'vast', which means 'hold fast'. In addition to its use as a command, 'avast' can also be used as an exclamation to get someone's attention or to express surprise.
