Automatic Identification Systems (AIS)
Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automated tracking system that uses transponders on ships and is used by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels. AIS transponders transmit a ship's position, course, speed, and other information to other AIS-equipped vessels and to VTS stations. The system provides real-time information about the ship's movements, which helps in collision avoidance, search and rescue operations, and maritime security. AIS is mandatory for all vessels over 300 gross tonnage and all passenger ships regardless of size. It is also used by port authorities and maritime authorities for monitoring vessel traffic and enforcing regulations.
