Automatic Identification System
Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automated tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. AIS transponders on ships broadcast information such as the ship's name, position, course, and speed, as well as other relevant information such as cargo, destination, and ETA. AIS is used to improve maritime safety and security, aid in navigation, and facilitate efficient vessel traffic management. It is mandatory for all vessels over 300 gross tonnage engaged in international voyages, and is also widely used on smaller vessels voluntarily.
