Athens Convention

The Athens Convention is a maritime treaty established in 1974 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to codify the rights and responsibilities of passengers and carriers in international voyages. The full name of the treaty is 'Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea'. It sets a framework for compensating passengers carried on seagoing vessels in the event of personal injury or death, or loss or damage to luggage, arising from a shipping incident. The convention also establishes a system of strict liability for carriers, meaning they are liable for damages regardless of fault, up to a certain limit. The Athens Convention has been amended several times, most notably by the 2002 Protocol, which significantly increased the limits of liability and introduced compulsory insurance for carriers.
